The Truth About Fillers

The vast majority of multi-vitamins, individual supplements and protein products today whether in pill, chewable, or powder form contain at least 25% filler. Filler is a chemical product which is either put into the product to hold it together, to flavor, or to enlarge the product. Fillers prevent much of the necessary absorption bariatric patients require for health maintenance.

It is our concern that the following will hold true for anyone using products with fillers:

  • The filler will hinder the absorption of the product you’re taking. Picture an orange -- the inside being the vitamins which aid you, and the skin being the filler. You cannot get to the precious vitamins with an exterior shell preventing access to them. The same holds true for fillers.  If the filler binds to the vitamins and minerals, they are not readily available for absorption.

  • The filler may be harmful to your system in either the short or long term. Allergic reactions can have an effect on many organ systems in the body including the brain, which often displays symptoms such as fatigue, memory loss, depression, anxiety, hallucinations and insomnia.

  • Your labs may suffer if you’re taking vitamins with fillers, and if you do not get your labs done on a regular basis, you may find that what you thought you were doing to keep yourself healthy is in fact doing the opposite.

Following the time honored practices of the drug industry; many “natural” food supplements contain an awesome list of synthetic fillers. These pills, chewables, and powdered products are not in the best interest of the recipient.

To give you an example, Vitamin C in chewable form in doses of 1,000mg per day would contain approximately 250mg of filler, on average. Filler added to Vitamin C can, and usually does cause the Ascorbic Acid to break down. This in turn prevents much of the Ascorbic Acid from being absorbed. This also greatly decreases the shelf life of the vitamins.

The list of harmful fillers in multi-vitamins, individual supplements and protein powders may include: Magnesium Stearate, Lactose, Microcrystalline Cellulose, Silicon Dioxide, Titanium Dioxide, Stearic Acid, Sodium Starch Glycolate, Talc, Sucrose, Povidone, Pregelelatinized Starch, Hydroxy Propyl Cellulose, Ethylcellulose, Crospovidone, Shellac, Calcium Stearate.

Other potentially hazardous substances found as fillers in vitamin and mineral supplements are Sodium Benzoate, BHT, BHA, Tartrazine, Lactose, Peanut Oil, Hydrogenated Cottonseed Oil, Titanium Dioxide, Polysorbate 80, Microcrystalline Cellulose, Magnesium Stearate, Red Dye NO. 33 and 40, Ethyl Cellulose, Sorbic Acid, Fractionated Coconut Oil and Cornstarch.

Reports indicate that there may be long term hazardous effects of taking such chemicals on a regular basis, some of which include coronary artery disease. BHT, BHA, chlorinated pesticides such as DDT, plasticizers, aromatics, as well as some alkanes (saturated hydrocarbons such as paraffin or wax).  Many of these things have been found deposited in the plaque of individuals suffering from coronary artery disease. People who use large numbers of vitamin and mineral chewables may actually be contributing to the diseases they are attempting to prevent.

Based on all this information, the best advice would be to purchase supplements in capsule, or naturally compressed tablets form. You can also purchase powders or liquids that contain no additives or fillers.

Your health is your business and it should not be taken lightly. Reducing or eliminating medical concerns by making wise vitamin choices, as well as making sure that your labs are satisfactory are what should be most important to you.
